Happy Birthday to the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge!

Today is a special day for me and Claudia, a dear friend of mine. Exactly a year ago, on March 30th 2012, I launched the appeal for the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge. I was desperate, I was losing it, the stray animal suffering was getting too painful for me to endure. And my way to address it was through sterilizations, as rational means to prevent more future suffering; and as way to help not just a few, but very many animals. Claudia heard my cry for help and helped me create a Facebook event for the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge; believing in my dream and fighting side by side with me for it.

On our first anniversary of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge, our birthday cake should look like this:

But our first birthday cake looks more like this!

328 animals sterilized in 2012, and 248 animals sterilized in 2013 up to now, that's a total of 576 animals sterilized in one year!

March 30th 2012- March 30th 2013: 576 sterilized animals in the first year of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge; and countless thousands that will not be born anymore to a life of suffering... That's not little! We love them so much and so selflessly that we do everything to prevent more pups from being born to a life of suffering

Thank you so much to the 150+ donors who have supported our sterilizations; to the many more who have shared and promoted our work; to the ones wise and visionary who are aware that stray animal overpopulation is too severe, and mass sterilizations are a must so that true change can occur.

The Ploiesti Neutering Challenge goes on. We fight towards the day when no pup would be born to be abandoned again in the streets of Ploiesti!

Ploiesti Neutering Challenge Day 26

On March 27th we picked up a total of 16 females for free sterilizations as part of Day 26 of our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge. Nine females were from Ploiesti, while 7 were from a nearby village with high stray density.

We picked up this stray female for sterilization. She is terribly sweet and she used to have an owner of her own. But her owner kicked her out the moment she got pregnant. A painfully common story of Romanian dog ownership here. So her pups were born in the street among some ruins...

The 4 remaining pups of the now stray mom we took for free sterilization

And a short video of the 4 little darlings the day we took their mom for sterilization:

While we stand first and foremost for sterilizations as means to prevent future suffering and abandonment, these pups already born need us, and we need help with finding them good responsible owners

Two days later, on March 29th, we returned the 16 sterilized females back to their carers and into their territories:

The sterilized mommy, on her way back to the puppies from her last litter ever

Bogdan upon returning a sterilized female dog

And some sterilized cats

On day 26 we had 16 females sterilized. Day 26 was made possible by one generous anonymous friend, and Toni, Nicoleta, Zoe and her Onbe, Jane and her Quido. Thank you so much, you all!

Day 26 is the last day of sterilizations this month, a month that has been our most productive month yet, with a total of 105 sterilizations! And yes, my dream to have at least 100 animals sterilized this month has been fulfilled. I am extremely grateful and happy!

We did it! We did go over 100 sterilizations this month!

Thank you!

Holland, please come!

On April 1st, 2013 I will be attending with friends the Zwerfdieren Festival in Holland dedicated to stray animals worldwide. We will represent the RSDP and tell people about our work and the great need of help in Ploiesti and Romania generally. Please, come meet us in person and find out ways to get involved and make a difference for needy strays. Thousands of homeless animals from Ploiesti, Romania really need your help and would appreciate your being there to show your support for strays.

More about the event on the event webpage here.

I also wish to see as many of my former babies as possible at the event. It's for them that we fight, and the moments we encounter again our former rescue dogs are very precious to us; they keep us going. So children, please do come to mamma on April 1st! I will be there hoping to meet again as many of you as possible.

Many thanks!

Ploiesti Neutering Challenge Day 25

On Monday, March 25th we held Day 25 of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge, this time directly at the FPCC vet clinic. Animal carers brought in for free sterilizations a total of 12 females (10 dogs and 2 cats). Not all animals were from Ploiesti. Some were brought in for sterilizations from villages of the greater Prahova County. This is a great pilot program in villages surrounding Ploiesti as people from the countryside learn this way about sterilizations and how great and easy it is to have your female sterilized for free, and not have to worry about puppies anymore!

She looks sweet and puppyish, but in fact this female stray has already mothered in the streets and all her puppies have died. No more of this!

Another lovely homeless female brought in for sterilization

Day 25 saved the life of this female stray. Turns out she had pyometra. In the streets, without vet care, this could have killed her

Vet Gabi Bratu sterilizing away, saving lives and preventing more suffering

Tiny spay incision with minimal recovery time

This female is already recovered from general anesthesia and ready to leave the clinic on her own paws, accompanied by her carer

Sterilizations save lives and prevent the suffering of more innocent pups. Day 25 with 12 sterilizations, plus one emergency sterilization performed on March 21st, were made possible by a very generous friend and donor who preferred to remain anonymous. Thank you so much for your kind gift to these needy animals!

Today I am very happy. The weather is terrible here, it's been a rough day with lots of things going on, ups and downs, but I am happy! I am happy because now Tilda, a former Ploiesti stray, is happily adopted in Sweden by the most wonderful mom I could have wished for her. It's also our first adoption of a homeless animal in a Scandinavian country, and to us, it's an important milestone. Tilda, who endured several years in the streets, is now finally leading the beautiful life she deserved all along!

How Tilda's mommy waited for Tilda!

Tilda on the airport in Stockholm yesterday

Tilda on her first night is Sweden, already smiling

Tilda this morning, already "at work" and getting adjusted to her new life

Tilda was a stray whom we had sterilized on Day 14 of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge, together with many other females from her area. Luckily for her, her pictures captured the heart of her new mom. Thank you so much to all the lovely people who made her adoption possible and shared her pictures, to friend Anna, to the OneVet clinic that prepared her thoroughly for adoption and hosted her, to the person who flew with Tilda to Sweden. Many great people who helped Tilda make it to her wonderful new mom. For Tilda, a former Ploiesti stray, I thank you from the heart!

Ploiesti Neutering Challenge Day 24

On March 20th, right after releasing the animals sterilized on Day 23, we proceeded with collecting more animals for free sterilizations as part of our Day 24 of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge. This time, we collected 15 females for free sterilizations:

Ionut using the humane trap to catch one stray female dog

Two females whose bodies tell us they have mothered in the streets before. No more pups born in the streets from you, lovely ladies!

One pack from where we managed to catch for sterilizations almost all females

Back at a densely populated factory site, using the humane trap again

Two lovely young females, homeless Cocker mixes, on their way to get sterilized

Two days later, on March 22nd, we returned the 15 sterilized animals back into their territories and to their carers:

Their carers waited for them with food

This stray female dog was in heat a couple of weeks ago. This is what the males did to her over the course of one night while she was in heat- she now has no hair left on a big chunk of her back. No more such painful experiences for you, sweet girl! And for sure, no more pups from you!

Street is the place they call home... But at least they won't bring into this world any more pups to lead such tragic life. We work through sterilizations in order to stop the circle of suffering

And a video of the sterilized females right before getting released:

Fifteen more females that won't get to reproduce anymore in the streets of Ploiesti. We are very grateful to K-9 Angels and to Jean O'Donnell who covered 5 of these sterilizations, and to an anonymous donor who made possible the other 10 sterilizations (plus more sterilization days to come!). Thank you so, so much, you wonderful, beautiful people!

Super gifts from Holland!

This month we have received some super useful gifts from Holland from two friend organizations, Dog's Wish and Help4Strays. Gifts that will make it a long way and help many needy animals here:

A complete medical kit plus one big box of bandages, sterile compresses and other necessary medical supplies from Dog's Wish!

Two big boxes full with leashes, collars, harnesses, plenty of doggie toys, bowls, etc, from Help4Strays!

We happily shared the aid with the vets we're working with and with several local animal carers. Thank you so much, Dog's Wish and Help4Strays, and many thanks to your supporters and friends, for the wonderful gifts you've sent to the Ploiesti homeless dogs!

Ploiesti Neutering Challenge Day 23 courtesy of K-9 Angels

On Monday, March 18th we picked up 16 animals for free sterilizations as part of Day 23 of the Ploiesti Neutering Challenge, a campaign born out of a most selfless and pure love and compassion for the homeless animals; a campaign with the aim to prevent as many unwanted litters as possible from being born to suffer.

Here is Day 23 pickup in pictures:

We took for sterilization the mom of these two adorable stray puppies

Bogdan working on earning the trust of some homeless dogs to be taken for sterilizations

At a factory site, very many dogs needing sterilizations...

For some fearful females, the use of the humane trap was a must

Two days later, on March 20th, we returned the 16 sterilized animals back into their territories or to their carers:

Ladies from the factory site, now sterilized

 Returned sterilized to their owners

An older owned female, now sterilized. No more pups for you, sweet lady!

Day 23 with 16 sterilizations, plus the 3 emergency sterilizations performed previously on March 12th and March 15th, were made possible by the wonderful K-9 Angels and friend Jean O'Donnell. Thank you from the heart for hearing and responding to homeless animals' cry for help in Ploiesti, Romania!
