RSDP at Foreign Dog Day in Holland!

Dutch organizations concerned about foreign dogs are holding a Foreign Dog Day in Holland on September 2nd (please see this link for more information). Happily, Romanian Stray Dogs Ploiesti will be represented at the event by 2 dear friends. If you ever adopted a dog from us or are considering it, if you'd like to find out more information about our work, or if you'd like to bring any aid for Romanian Stray Dogs Ploiesti, you are highly encouraged to attend the event.

Thank you dearly!

A different kind of ABBA story

Some days ago, somebody threw in a garbage collection point in Ploiesti 4 little pups. Just like garbage.

Apart from the sheer cruelty of disposing of some little pups like this, their condition was appalling. They had the heaviest infestation of fleas and ticks we had ever seen:

The 4 pups received right away flea baths as well much much needed flea treatment

One of the little girls resting after the flea bath

The 4 pups (2 boys and 2 girls) recovering after their flea bath

Now the 4 little ABBA pups (boys Benny and Bjorn, and girls Agnetha and Anni-Frid) are in foster care, finally in safety. Despite their terrible initial condition, they're all doing well, are playful and with big appetites!

Little boy Bjorn unsuccessfully trying to suckle some milk

But surrogate mom Babushka likes to step in and spend some time with the little ones

Babushka and the little ABBA pups enjoying spending time together

In the future, both the ABBA pups and Babushka will need their forever homes. They are all adorable doggies with so much love and joyfulness to give. And by all means, they are definitely not worthless garbage...

Educational booklets from RAR are here!

Very soon we will begin an education program here in Ploiesti concerning the ethical and responsible treatment of strays. Thank you dearly, Nancy Janes and RAR, FPCC and Mayhew International, for the first 200 educational booklets to be used in the schools of Ploiesti! This is the first educational program of this kind in Ploiesti, and hopefully a strong beginning for teaching young generations how to treat animals humanely and responsibly. For without education, we really cannot reach that far, despite neutering campaigns and adoptions of local strays.

The first 200 educational booklets concerning the treatment of animals are here!

It's really education the one that can shift mentalities and truly move mountains. Let's hope for a great beginning with the launch of this first educational program in Ploiesti!

Babushka update

Babushka is a golden oldie in our care, one truly exceptional, friendly and easy going tiny lady that still has lots of love and energy to give. Babushka (or dearly Babush or Baba as we call her) was abandoned some weeks ago in the streets of Ploiesti. Still wearing her old collar, she just waited and waited and waited for days in the same spot where they dumped her. As if she kept on hoping they'd return for her. Well, they never did.

While waiting in the streets, Babushka also went into heat, and whole packs of males would follow her everywhere, dogs several times her size. She also caught outdoors one severe storm before we managed to secure for her a place in foster care locally, then developed kennel cough followed by pneumonia.

Leaving behind her misfortunes, Babushka is an incredible old lady, always full of energy and happy go lucky, and always glad to be with people and other dogs. She's also brilliant at walking on leash in the park, and she is the utmost lovey dovey lap dog. Because of her very sweet and beautiful personality, we suspect her owner must have passed away, Babushka probably being dumped by her owner's relatives. Otherwise, we cannot imagine why would anyone dispose of a golden dog like Babushka.

Here's Babushka these days, on her way to the vet (by the way, she is also a brilliant patient and accepts calmly her antibiotics injections at the vet). She loves to go for a run and just loves to be taken out for walks:

Babushka has already been spayed, she had her teeth cleaned and her eyes checked. And the vet also gave us good news: Babushka is not even that old, probably in the range of 5-7 years old only. She's still got so much more of her terrific self to give to the world!

Ploiesti Neutering Challenge Day 8

On August 8th we held Day 8 of our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge, courtesy of Romania Animal Rescue and SterilizeDogs NL, with the RAR vet team that came from Bucharest for this event. On this occasion, 35 more animals were sterilized, which raises the total number of sterilized animals to 212 as part of our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge!

Day 8 took place at the veterinary clinic of the local Bucov shelter, with permission from the local administration. Owned dogs, street dogs and shelter dogs, all benefited from free sterilizations. Thirty-five animals (22 dogs and 13 cats) will not be multiplying anymore in an already sorely overpopulated community.

Let's see how Day 8 went!

Thank you dearly, Romania Animal Rescue and SterilizeDogs NL, for your continued commitment and support for the Ploiesti strays! And thank you from the heart, RAR vet team, for coming to Ploiesti and helping 35 more animals not multiply anymore. Your professionalism and hard work are greatly appreciated.

Little by little, day by day, a lot can be achieved. Since March 30th 2012, 212 sterilizations performed as part of our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge. How far can we go?

Santa Claus Smokey

There was once an abandoned little pup on the streets of Ploiesti, dirty, alone, hungry and hit by a car, a pup we rescued in early December of last year and called Smokey:

For two months we fostered Smokey together with 3 other pups and got him ready for adoption abroad. At the end of January, Smokey flew to Amsterdam and was soon adopted by someone truly special, the best owner Smokey could have ever had. Some matches are truly made in heaven, and to me this is definitely one.

Smokey is a super lucky former Ploiesti stray pooch now happily adopted in Holland, a doggie that accompanies his owner to work daily, goes on trips and festivals with him, and is not "just" a dog for his owner. Meet Smokey nowadays, one lucky doggie, now bigger than a German Shepherd (and simply stunningly gorgeous):

What is truly amazing is that this summer, Smokey acted as Santa Claus for the stray brothers and sisters he left behind in Ploiesti. Smokey, his owner Nico, and their friend Leon came to visit Romania and spend their holiday here in Smokey's native land. With this occasion, Smokey came back to Ploiesti with a van full of aid for the ones he left behind, the ones who weren't as lucky as him.

We here thank dearly Smokey and his Dutch friends for all the aid they sent to Ploiesti. Where do I begin? Plenty of dog and cat food and treats, lots of collars, leashes and harnesses, lots of medical supplies such as de-wormers and flea treatments but also devices used during surgeries, doggie beds and blankets, several bags of doggie toys, metal and plastic kennels, food and water bowls, and over 200 euro in donations to be used for the animals of Ploiesti (and I am pretty sure the list of aid goes on and on, and the quantity and quality of the aid is simply jaw dropping).

But all the more amazing is that Smokey did not forget us, the ones who took care of him during his puppyhood in Romania. He did remember and reacted to all the people who were involved in his care here, he remembered his former foster courtyard, and he most definitely remembered my dogs he used to play with as a pup. Such moments do touch your heart (sigh...) and make you realize how all the effort from back then was so worth it. He did remember us!

After leaving Ploiesti, Smokey is touring Romania with his owner Nico and friend Leon. Last I have heard, Smokey was in a boat getting a tour of the Delta, then swimming in the Black Sea with Nico and Leon. A dog's life! (sigh again)

Thank you, Baron Smokey Bear (as we used to call him), for the many gifts you've brought to the ones you left behind, and thank you from the heart for not forgetting us!

And some more sterilizations

Our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge (ummm, me) took a vacation this July. Still, 3 lovely ladies benefited from free sterilizations as part of this campaign, which raises the total number of sterilizations performed to 177! Meet the lucky ladies:

Mia, rescued from a horrible case of animal cruelty from the countryside, now in foster care locally. Her last litter of kittens was drowned in the river by her former owner

Little Angel, one tiny teenage darling

Babushka, who soon after being abandoned by her former owner went into heat in the streets and got chased by whole packs of large males. Well, no more of that, sweet old lady

Thank you dearly, Krystin, Annette and Ulrike, for helping us sterilize these 3 ladies in July!

Bottom line: 177 sterilizations performed as part of our Ploiesti Neutering Challenge since March 30th!

Many thanks from Ploiesti

A few weeks ago two lovely Dutch friends from the organization SterilizeDogs NL visited Ploiesti and brought with them a huge, generous box of goodies for the local stray animals:

Thank you, Help4Strays, for the many kennels, leashes and collars! And thank you dearly, SterilizeDogs NL, for the extra leashes and collars and ensuring the transport of all the aid to Ploiesti!

Here are some of the sterilized doggies in our care that benefited from the aid:

The SterilizeDogs NL volunteers also had a tour of Ploiesti and of the local stray packs in our care, met with local rescuers, visited the Bucov shelter and attended a meeting with the newly appointed director of the shelter. One super productive day indeed!

Cherry on top, at the end of their visit in Ploiesti, the SterilizeDogs NL volunteers did not leave Ploiesti empty handed, but took back with them to Holland 4 beauties prepped for adoption:

From left to right, please meet Maureen, Dotje, Maika, and Piki-Sorina, 4 extremely lucky Ploiesti ladies

Thank you dearly, Dutch friends, for your visit and for caring about our local animals so much. And thank you, donors of Help4Strays and SterilizeDogs NL, for helping these organizations help the Ploiesti doggies. Thank you from the heart!
